Ammonites thrived in the seas in the Jurassic Period about 150 million years ago. They were relatives of squids and nautili which thrived in the seas doing the time of the dinosaurs. Their name originates from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon. There were many different varieties, ranging in size from a penny to a tractor tyre! Their origin is Madagascar in the Indian Ocean off the coast of southern Africa.
